Why Rent a Car in Saranda, Albania?

Saranda is the gateway to the Albanian Riviera, and renting a car in Saranda is the best way to explore must-see sights like Ksamil, the Blue Eye spring, and Butrint — all of which are difficult to reach without your own vehicle.

Top Attractions Near Saranda You Can Only Reach by Car

If you’re only planning to sunbathe at the town beach, you don’t really need a car. But the real highlights of the region — the Ksamil Islands, the Blue Eye spring, the ancient ruins of Butrint, or the winding mountain road through the Llogara Pass — all lie outside the city limits.

Is Public Transport in Saranda a Viable Option?

Reaching these places via public transport is difficult: buses are rare, schedules unreliable, and taxis quickly burn through your budget. If you want to explore freely and keep your plans flexible, renting a car in Saranda is your best option.

Getting to Saranda: The Corfu Connection

Look at the map and the logic is obvious: while Tirana Airport is a 4–5 hour drive over the mountains, Corfu Airport (CFU) is only a few kilometers away by air.

Why Most Travelers Fly to Corfu Instead of Tirana

That’s why most savvy travelers fly to Corfu and then continue to Saranda. It is simply faster and often cheaper.

Cross-Border Issues with Greek Rental Cars

But here comes the crucial part many international travelers don’t know: we’re talking about two different countries and two very different systems. Corfu (Greece) is part of the EU and the Schengen Area, while Albania is not. This 30-minute ferry ride is not just a quick hop — it’s an international border crossing.

Many visitors assume they can simply drive onto the ferry with their Greek rental car. Big mistake. Most Greek rental agencies forbid travel outside the EU or charge an extra €40–€80 and require a Green Card.

Foot Passenger Ferry vs Car Ferry – Key Differences

Plus, cars are only allowed on the slower ferry (70–90 minutes), which is more expensive.

The smarter solution is to arrive as a foot passenger and take the fast hydrofoil boats (30 minutes). They’re clean, fast, and drop you off right in the center of Saranda.

The two main ferry operators are Ionian Seaways and Finikas Lines — click the links for exact schedules. Ticket prices are around €20–30 one way.

Port Logistics: From Corfu Airport to the Ferry Terminal

Once you land in Corfu, your goal is the Port.

Cheapest Way to Get from Corfu Airport to the Port Don’t jump into a €25 taxi unless you really want to: just outside the terminal exit, the Blue Bus No. 15 takes you directly to the ferry gate for only about €1.20. You can buy your ticket from the machine at the bus stop or directly from the driver (have coins ready).

⚠️ The Time Zone Trap – Don’t Miss Your Flight

Since you’re crossing a border, you also need to adjust your watch.

Planning Your Return Trip with the Time Difference in Mind Greece (GMT+3) is always one hour ahead of Albania (GMT+2). If your flight from Corfu is at 14:00 Greek time, it’s only 13:00 in Albania — and with the border, ferry, and bus back to the airport, you’ll need to leave Saranda at least 4–5 hours before your flight (in Albanian time).

Where to Pick Up Your Rental Car in Saranda After Clearing Passport Control?

After arriving by ferry from Corfu, you’ll pass through passport control, as Albania is not part of the EU. Once cleared, you’ll exit directly into Saranda Port, which is in the center of town. Most local rental companies (like Localrent or Rent from Locals) will meet you right outside the port gates with your name on a sign, complete the paperwork on the spot, and hand over the keys — so no taxi is needed.

Can I Rent a Car in Saranda Without a Deposit or Credit Card?

Yes, you can rent a car in Saranda without a deposit or credit card — if you book with local providers. These companies offer flexible payment and security options that are not available with most international brands.

Here’s what you get:

  • No large security deposit blocked on your card
  • Accepted payment methods: cash, debit card (Revolut, Wise)
  • Optional full insurance available
  • Pickup at Saranda Port after the ferry from Corfu

How does ‘No Deposit’ work? Instead of blocking €800-1500 on a credit card (which is standard for international brands), local providers via Localrent often ask for just €100-200 cash, or nothing at all. This is perfect if you only have a debit card (like Revolut or Wise) and don’t want to tie up your holiday funds.

Many travelers are hesitant to have their credit card charged or blocked with a large security deposit by rental companies. With big international companies, this is standard practice: a deposit is mandatory. However, several local Albanian rental providers offer much more flexibility, with no-deposit or low-deposit options.

So the question becomes: who do you trust more? A major aggregator company where you do have to pay a deposit, but hundreds of thousands have tried it before you with positive feedback? Or a smaller regional/local provider with fewer reviews, but who asks for little or no deposit and is typically cheaper?

The decision is yours. Let’s look at the alternatives:

  1. DiscoverCars (The Safe Bet) This is who we used for our Butrint trip. They are a well-known international provider, and their strength lies in their wide selection – we rented a Dacia Duster from them. Even with over 210,000 reviews, DiscoverCars has a 4.6 rating – there is minimal chance of going wrong with them.

Downside: Almost always requires a credit card.

  1. Localrent (The Balkan Specialist) A regional car rental platform. If you are thinking about a Balkan road trip or just a simple cross-border trip (e.g. popping over to Greece from Albania), choose them – they have the best prices for cross-border rentals. They also have a 4.8 rating on Trustpilot based on nearly 5,000 reviews.

Advantage: Localrent has a “No Deposit” rental option for several car types.

  1. Rent from Locals (The Personal Touch) This is also a local aggregator company, characterized by flexibility. We used WhatsApp for communication – this is typical for Albanian providers, so have a WhatsApp account if you are coming here – and they can even give practical advice regarding your planned routes. They also have no deposit / low deposit options for certain car types. Rated 4.7.

When and Where to Book for the Best Rates

Saranda Car Rental Insurance

Besides renting, I recommend getting full coverage insurance, because the standard Albanian TPL (Third Party Liability) only covers theft and damage caused to others, nothing else.

The tires, windshield, undercarriage, and roof are NOT covered by the basic insurance.

That is why Full Coverage (Super CDW) is important – it reduces your excess to zero if something happens to the car. (This only won’t reimburse you if you caused damage while drunk or exceeding the speed limit). This makes the rental more expensive – it can increase the daily rate by up to 30-50% – but overall it is worth the price because it gives you peace of mind. So, super CDW isn’t mandatory, but it’s your financial airbag on the SH8. Saranda electric car rental – is it possible?

If you’re considering renting an electric vehicle in Saranda, it’s absolutely possible — but range, terrain, and charger availability matter more here than in Tirana or the coast. Small Car or SUV – Which Is Right for Your Trip?

City cars are easy to park, fuel-efficient, and cheaper. But for mountain drives or off-the-beaten-path beaches, consider something bigger.

SUV Rental in Saranda – Do You Really Need One?

Popular models: Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai.

Roads Where a Standard Car Isn’t Enough Some places — like Gjipe Beach — require high clearance. While you can drive to the parking lot, the road down to the beach is strictly for 4x4s or hiking. Regular cars may be forbidden by the rental provider on such terrain.

Paradise found at Gjipe Beach. Reaching stunning, remote spots like this via their rough access roads is the main reason to consider SUV rental in Saranda.

Beaches You Should Avoid with a Small Car Applies to other remote spots, like parts of Livadhi or Gjiri i Akuariumit. For these, an SUV is almost required.

Driving, Parking, and Logistics in Saranda

Parking Availability in High Season Saranda is compact, and parking in high season is a challenge.

Top Tip: Book accommodation with private parking in July–August if you’ll have a rental car. Street parking can be nearly impossible in the center.

Road Conditions on the Albanian Riviera

  • Coastal Road (SH8): The main road north towards Himarë and Vlorë is very well paved and offers spectacular scenery but is very winding with sharp curves. Drive attentively, like us, enjoy the views, and allow plenty of time.
  • Roads to Ksamil/Butrint: Generally well-paved and easy to navigate.
  • Road to Gjirokastër (SH78): Paved but winding mountain road; scenic but requires careful driving.

Warning: Off-Road Beaches Be careful: roads to remote beaches (like Gjipe or Mirror Beach) are often gravel or rough. Standard city cars might struggle here — this is where an SUV is recommended.

What Documents Do You Need to Rent a Car in Albania?

  • Valid passport or ID
  • Driver’s license
  • Credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit (check Localrent/Rent from Locals for potential debit/cash alternatives, confirming directly).
  • Minimum age: Usually 21–23, with potential fees for drivers under 25.

Credit Card vs Debit Card – What Do Companies Accept? Some local providers (via Localrent or Rent from Locals) allow debit or even cash — but always confirm in advance.

What to Check When Picking Up Your Rental Car

Vehicle Condition Documentation – Photos & Videos Check for dents, scratches, and take photos/videos — have them listed in the handover form.

Fuel Policies: Full-to-Full vs Same-to-Same Know your fuel policy. Most follow “full-to-full”, but in our last case it was “same-to-same” (we got the car with half a tank and had to return it that way). Take a photo of the gauge!

Can You Pay for Fuel in Albania with Card or Cash?

Most gas stations in Albania accept cash (LEK or EUR). Some take cards, but it’s safer to have cash — especially in rural areas. You have to pay directly to the attendant, not in the store.

Local Driving Style – Defensive Driving Is Key It’s not aggressive but can feel chaotic. Stay alert, keep your distance, and drive calmly.
